Adaptogens are a group of herbs and roots which work to improve the body’s ability to deal with stress. Adaptogens have been used for thousands of years in traditional herbal and Ayurvedic medicine, and a number of studies have shown adaptogens to provide a number of benefits including helping to reduce fatigue, depression, anxiety and helping to bring balance to the body. Adaptogens are named as such because they adapt to the needs of each individual body to bring them balance. There are over 70 different plants that are considered adaptogens and this article we will discuss a few of the adaptogens that can be found in our products.
Ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub that grows in Asia and Africa and has been called the king of Ayurvedic herbs. As an adaptogen, Ashwagandha is commonly used to help with stress and anxiety, but in fact it has a number of other purported benefits. Ashwagandha is also used to help with sleep and reduce insomnia, reduce fatigue, promote balance within the body, boost the immune system, boost mood and even reduce joint pain. Ashwagandha is such a versatile adaptogen that we have included it in both our Sleep + Immunity and Travel Immunity products.
In our Sleep + Immunity product we included Ashwagandha for its anti-insomnia, anti-fatigue and de-stressing properties. We know that travelling can get stressful, so we included Ashwagandha in Travel Immunity to help reduce any travel related stress.
Lemon Balm (Melissa Officinalis) is a perennial herbaceous plant commonly found in the Mediterranean region. Like Ashwagandha, Lemon Balm has been used for thousands of years, and also brings a number of different benefits. Again, as an adaptogen it has been shown to be effective in reducing stress and anxiety, but it has also been shown to have strong antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. The high number of flavonoids found in Lemon Balm also give it strong anti-oxidant properties, helping to reduce inflammation in the body. Lemon Balm also has a long-standing reputation as a calming and uplifting herb that improves mood.
In Travel Immunity, we use Lemon Balm for its antiviral, antibacterial and anti-oxidant properties to give our customers protection from illness and inflammation while travelling, while its calming and de-stressing properties help to alleviate the stress of travelling.
Turmeric is a plant in the ginger family and is native to Southeast Asia. Turmeric has historically been used in Ayurvedic and Eastern Asian medical systems. Turmeric contains the compound curcumin, among others, which are responsible for the strong anti-oxidant properties found in Turmeric. These protective compounds reduce inflammation in the body which helps to prevent chronic age-related illnesses. Compounds found in Turmeric have also been shown to support cognitive function and help trigger cell repair in the brain.
Turmeric also has a number of benefits for the immune system, which is why we have included it in Essential Immunity and Sleep + Immunity to help provide robust, full-spectrum support for the immune system. Studies have shown that Turmeric acts as an immune modulator on important immune cells, such as T Cells, B Cells and Natural Killer cells. Turmeric can also enhance antibody responses, helping to fight off infections.
Adaptogenic plants play an important role in not only balancing and de-stressing the body, but can also offer a number of other benefits to support the immune system, promote wellness and boost overall health.
